I think the next time I see one I will buy it and give it a try.
It’s Something different. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitaya says :Particularly red-skinned pitayas are a good source of vitamin C.[citation needed]
Pitayas are rich in fiber and minerals, notably phosphorus and calcium.[citation needed] Red pitayas seem to be richer in the former, yellow ones in the latter.
that is the red variant of dragon fruit or Pitaya. A cactus fruit. Origin from Thailand – what I know. My brother has grown it one in my parent yard in Bali.
Well, I am a bit slow to respond this time, but I was going to say that I had never seen anything like it. But Dragon Fruit – well that is different! We do have dragons here in Australia (well, they are lizards really, but they are called dragons!) but no naturally occurring Dragon Fruit!

Thank you for explanation. Was something different to me.It is quite expensive also $2.00 NZ dollar for half of it
Dragonfruit! Wow!!!! We don’t have those here….what a sweet treat!
Quite expensive here but something different 🙂
Most unusual fruit. My dad used to tell us about the Dragon fruit he had as a boy in Indonesia.
Something different if you haven’t seen it before. Does not have an outstanding taste at all.
i see you have your answer scrapydo … how did it taste? i have had both tasty and mild fruits … i think it depends how ripe they are when picked …
Tasted ok. It was maybe a bit ripe because it did not have an outstanding taste to me. 🙂
now do you have some dragons to feed them?
Ha ha, luckily they are imported, we do not have the dragons here! 🙂

Comes from Mexico and also the east. Kind of unusual to me too. I found another mailbox a few weeks ago here is my link https://scrapydo.wordpress.com/2013/03/27/mail-box/
Shame it doesn’t have a wonderful taste with such a dramatic appearance! Don’t have them here in Hartlepool! 🙂
I think it is because it is a fruit that belongs in drier places, more water/liquid than taste
