Weekly Writing Challenge: A Few of My Favorite Things

Sometimes it is very hard to write the things you want to write about. It helps a lot to follow some tips and indications on what and how to write. The weekly writing challenge is going to give me the opportunity to try my hand at a bit more writing and not only photos.

A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS

The first thing that comes to mind is my mother’s old Singer sewing machine.

In 2010 I had to go back to South Africa and that gave me the opportunity to take some photos of old family heirlooms!

Some are with me, others are with my two sisters.

This sewing machine has been there since I can remember. My mother made all our clothes. She was a very good seamstress. She even made my sisters wedding gown on this machine.

On this machine we all three sisters learned to sew.

Today it has gathered a lot of dust because it has not been used for many years now.

Outside box

The sewing machine itself is very dusty and worn!

The front.

The side.

Here it is in its hiding place. Still in my late mothers room on the same spot where it always was

The cover was/is a cushion cover my sister made also many years ago.

The next favorite thing is this old coffee can.

I do not have much information about it all I know is that my mother told me it is one they used for funerals. That is why it is black. The sun and air has damaged it a lot. I think it would be hard to restore.

Then there is also these special teacups and tea-pot. They were only used on very special occasions.

THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad

How it works: Every Monday, we lay out a different challenge along with tips on tackling it, useful resources, and example posts. You read, think, ask questions (we’ll be here!), and get to blogging, tagging your posts with “DPchallenge.” We keep an eye on the tag and highlight the week’s best posts on Freshly Pressed each Friday.
