Summer is “vygie” time. In South Africa we always had “vygies” in our garden.
I discovered that they grow here in NZ. I bought myself a plant and here are the first flowers. Only a few for the first time. Last summer it was already a much bigger plant and during SUMMER it was covered with flowers.
First of all, some of you might be wondering– what the heck is a Vygie?
Easy! A Vygie is any member of the Aizoaceae (formerly Mesembryanthemaceae – OMG, that is a mouthful!) and it is a remarkable group of plants! Among the 1700 species (96% of which are found in South Africa!), there is a LOT of diversity. We prefer those that are vigorous, colorful, easy to grow, drought tolerant and NOT invasive. Does this mean we have to be picky? Not hardly! There are so many fascinating, garden worthy species to choose from!

Wonderful…I love purple flowers.
They catch your eye every time when you pass a patch that is in full bloom. I couldn’t help myself I had to buy a plant to put in my small garden.

We call them “ice plants” here because they are so full of water that they can stop our wildfires in their tracks. They are plant all along the freeways and make for quite a showy spring.
Oh, that’s very interesting. Thanks for the information.
